Worst time to watch:When you're not in the mood for some teenager's bullshit problems. As much as it might suck to be young and stupid, it sucks even more to be old and have firsthand knowledge of all the different ways life can spit in your face and fuck up your plans.

In The Edge of Seventeen (2016), 17-year-old Nadine Byrd (Hailee Steinfeld) navigates the awkwardness of becoming an adult in her junior year of high school after her father dies of a heart attack. She reaches a crisis point when her only friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), hooks up with and begins dating her older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). Her relationship with her mother, Mona (Kyra Sedgwick), further deteriorates as Nadine vents her frustration on friends, family, and her history teacher, Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson). The cloud has a silver lining when she meets a similarly awkward young man, Erwin (Hayden Szeto).
The teen sexual behavior, along with other scenes involving detailed sexual discussions, and frequent profanities (including about a dozen sexual expletives), may leave some parents convinced there is too much edge in this movie. Still, for families reeling from loss or other traumatic events, the script may provide emotional depictions that ring with sincerity.
Nadine is all alone in this world, except for her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). They have been friends since early childhood when the two became inseparable. Krista talked Nadine off the ledge when Nadine got a hairstyle that made her look like Pedro from the film Napoleon Dynamite. Nadine has never been on a date, but has a crush on bad boy Nick (Alexander Calvert), who she thinks has gotten hotter since he got out of "juvie." Little does Nadine recognize that there is a guy interested in her, Erwin (Hayden Szeto), who happens to have a big crush on Nadine but is extremely bad at small talk. 041b061a72
